A 13-time Grammy winner joins two slack-key guitar masters onstage Thursday night in Honokaa People’s Theatre for a very special performance.
Jerry Douglas, considered by many to be the world’s leading dobro player, will team up with Ledward Ka‘apana and Mike Ka‘awa for an unforgettable evening of music. All will perform in solo, duo and trio combinations.
The dobro is a resonator guitar that is heard primarily in bluegrass music today but is derived from the Hawaiian lap steel guitar of the 1920s, so it is extremely fitting to have it come home for this incredible event.
Tickets are $40 general, $60 reserved. Advance tickets are available at: CD Wizard, Hilo Guitar and Hilo Music Exchange in Hilo; Sound Wave Music and Kiernan Music in Kona; Waimea General Store in Waimea; Taro Patch Music in Honokaa; and online at www.lazarbear.com.
Ka‘apana and Ka‘awa, collectively known as The Hawaiian Legends, won the 2013 Na Hoku Hanohano award for Music Video/DVD of the Year. Ka‘apana, originally from Kalapana, was part of the legendary Hawaiian music trio Hui ‘Ohana with twin brother Nedward Ka‘apana and cousin Dennis Pavao, the late, great falsetto vocalist.
Douglas has performed with a who’s who of popular music, including Alison Krauss, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Mumford and Sons, Ray Charles, Phish, and Bela Fleck. Douglas met Ka‘apana in the 1990s when they toured and recorded together for Ka‘apana’s “Waltz of the Wind” CD.
James Taylor called Douglas “the Muhammad Ali of the dobro,” while John Fogarty of Creedence Clearwater Revival Fame noted: “Jerry’s my favorite musician, and I’m including Otis Redding and Elvis in that.”
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
